Birds

During April and May, thousands of migrant birds arrive on Capri. About ninety different species have been studied and ring-marked here. Some remain on the island to breed, others continue on their way north. The ten most common are:

Whinchat
Common Whitethroat
Pied Flycatcher
Wood Warbler
Garden Warbler
Spotted Flycatcher
Willow Warbler
Icterine Warbler
Wheatear
Redstart

The bright yellow oriole also quite often flies into the ornithologists’ net for ring-marking. On rare occasions, we see the beautiful and colourful hoopoe and European bee-eater, as well as different varieties of owl. A couple of peregrin falcons nests on the steep slope of a rock facing Castello Barbarossa, but on the whole there are few birds of prey on the island.
